Mountain biking is an intense sport and travel method that requires heavy-duty gear designed to withstand even the harshest terrains and weather conditions. Since the amount of fun you can have while mountain biking is dependent on staying safe and mobile, it is important to take your time while shopping for a new mountain bike setup.

Recognizing that looking for fresh bike gear can be challenging and time consuming, we are here to help with your search and provide you with thorough and informational bike reviews. In this article, we are specifically highlighting four, wide-ranging and competitive mountain bikes that are currently available to ride in the fields.

We hope that you find this comparison and detailed evaluation to be useful as you sort through many options to find your favorite mountain bike. To begin our review, we are placing the spotlight on the Trek Stache 9.7 mountain bike. Let’s check it out below.

What Is the Trek Stache Mountain Bike?

The Trek Stach 9.7 is a lightweight, 29+ trail hardtail mountain bike. This shredder offers riders extremely high performance on select terrain, mostly hills and buff trails. The Trek Stache is a powerful ride with large 29-in. x 3-in. tires and a carbon frame for dynamic riding that easily covers ground. Although seemingly oversized, the Trek Stache 9.7 maneuvers surprisingly well with great speed, but it won’t respond with so much agility on sharp turns.

This mountain bike builds incredible momentum with its chunky tires and short wheelbase. The Trek Stache 9.7 gives bikers the advantage of a full-suspension trail bike with the performance and response of a hardtail mountain bike. If you are looking for a bike that will deliver on challenging and expansive terrain with reliable traction, the Trek Stache 9.7 will be your perfect fit. The overall value is approachable, but due to its specialty terrain performance, we recommend considering this as a second bike since the Trek Stache won’t give you accurate response times on technical rides.

We think the Trek Stache rides with impressive force and is excellent when covering long, uneven, and rocky trails. The Trek Stache 9.7 will take you on high-speed, day-long rides with comfort and strength.

Product Specs

As we mentioned above, the Trek Stache 9.7 sits on 29-in. x 3-in. tires and an OCLV Mountain Carbon frame with Stranglehold dropouts, giving this mountain bike a lightweight feel with premium traction control. This Trek Stache 9.7 is supported by a RockShox Pike RL fork that gives 120mm of travel, and it operates with a SRAM GX Eagle 1×12 drivetrain. The Trek Stache features SUNringle Duroc 50mm rims, a Bontrager Drop Line post and a 35mm Bontrager Line Pro carbon handlebar for a durable and dependable ride. This bike weighs in at 26 pounds and 12oz, giving you a break and making transport easier.

PERFORMANCEWe think the Trek Stache 9.7 is an awesome bike for certain terrains and riders. It is fun to ride with smooth balance and stability, especially at high speeds. The handle bars and gears are slow moving and handling at first, but they loosen quickly to a comfortable function. Downhill rides are variable and can be rough with minimal responsiveness in tight spaces. The Trek Stache 9.7 performs best on dirt and day-long treks that demand little suspension support. Breaking time is extensive, especially when traveling at full speed. The performance of the Trek Stache 9.7 is stunted due to terrain restrictions and a lack of suspension, but the Trek Stache can be very fun to ride, as it is sturdy, reliable, and an easy climber.
DESIGN QUALITYOverall, tire tread is questionable, and we recommend replacing the stock tires with ones of similar dimensions but variable tread. The Trek Stache tends to spin out on loose gravel. The frame quality is excellent, durable, and lightweight. The Trek Stache 9.7 comes equipped with a SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain, which makes climbing much easier and less energy intensive.
SPECIAL FEATURESStocked with a Stranglehold dropout, the Trek Stache 9.7 can customize its geometry to each rider and ensure no-slip gear conversions. An OCLV Mountain Carbon frame and internal derailer routing give this mountain bike stability, safety and protection to keep you riding with power year after year.

  • Tubeless compatible
  • Great for long-distance treks

CONS

  • Moderate to high-end price point

This unit delivers a powerful ride with reliable parts, such as a RockShox Reba RL fork, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and a SRAM GX/NX 1×11 drivetrain, giving you flexibility and precision out on the trail. This drivetrain system allows for many low-gear options without the complications of a front derailleur. The Overdrive’s 29-in. wheels make challenging rock and chunky terrain more manageable, as they are backed by supreme traction control with a Blanchard 25 tubeless compatible wheel set. This cross-country hardtail trail bike is great for riders who are looking for speed, racing and precision control.
