As winter begins to thaw in some regions of the country, the National Interscholastic Cycling Association’s (NICA) spring leagues are spinning up for a season to remember. With races having started in late February, nearly 3,000 student-athletes from over 200 schools across NICA’s NorCal, SoCal, Texas, New York, and Alabama Leagues are all competing now and will complete their season by mid-May.
NICA’s programs have seen tremendous growth year after year, and 2016 is no different! With just over 10,000 total members nationwide, NICA is excited to launch inaugural race series in Pennsylvania, Nevada and Arkansas this coming fall bringing the total number of state-based leagues to nineteen.
After his recent visit to NICA HQ to attend their 6th Awards Banquet, Olympian Todd Wells observed, “The maturity level of kids involved with the NICA program is phenomenal, many of their stories inspirational and on top of all that they are just great people. The passion and tireless work of the people that setup the leagues and make them what they are is infectious and I believe with these people at the helm the best is yet to come.”
Are you a student-athlete, coach, parent, sibling, or alumni? NICA wants to hear your story! Send an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) and share how the program has positively influenced you!
Founded in 2009 as a 501(c)3 non-profit, the NICA develops interscholastic mountain biking programs for student-athletes and coaches across the United States. NICA provides leadership, services and governance for local leagues to produce quality mountain bike events, and supports every student-athlete in the development of strong body, strong mind and strong character through their efforts on the bike.
